KDrama “Que Sera Sera” cannot, I must say, avoid the typical clichés of dramas. It has the distinctive structure of four main leads who, inevitably, get paired up (usually with different people at least twice). This is evident in KDramas such as Spring Waltz, Goong, Goong S, A Love to Kill, and Save the Last Dance for Me. The main couple in QSS is Tae Joo (Eric) and Eun Soo (Jung Yoo Mi). The couple are like polar opposites in appearance: Eric is the suave, good-looking and charming lady’s man, while Yoo Mi is a petite, timid and hardworking sister of an ailing girl. What makes QSS different from most dramas is that the different couples in the drama are likeable and compatible.
The first couple I must acknowledge is Eun Soo and Shin Joon Hyuk (Lee Kyu Han). Although the main couple is who everyone typically roots for, I was hoping these two could actually end up together. If not for Tae Joo, this couple might actually have worked. At first glance, Eun Soo is with Joon Hyuk only to get back at Tae Joo who left her (more than once) for the heir of a wealthy businessman. But she’s also with Joon Hyuk because she feels a sense of loyalty to him. He relies on her for companionship, and even begs her to stay by his side. Although Eun Soo’s heart is with Tae Joo, she continues to date Joon Hyuk. They end up getting married, but their marriage is awkward and distinctly distant. But even with all these problems, the two are compatible because they are quiet but ambitious people who think of family as very important. They’re loyal, sentimental, and compassionate people, which is what I think made me adore this couple so much. While taking wedding photos, they are very affectionate (although somewhat distant) with each other.
Main couple Tae Joo and Eun Soo are the next couple up for discussion. With his playboy moves, Tae Joo is confident in attracting women; but to his discomfort, attracts Eun Soo, who is smitten to him after he kisses her in their flat’s elevator. She is persistent in their progression as a couple; he takes a while to warm up to her. However, Tae Joo is easily tired by Eun Soo’s antics, and suggests they discontinue their relationship as they are only in the early stages of romance. She is disheartened, but never wavering in her love for him. He is then pursued by Cha Hye Lin, the daughter of mall owner, who is desperate to evade her father’s arranged marriages. Eun Soo is hurt by Tae Joo, and goes out with Joon Hyuk who treats her kindly. They make up again during a business trip to Singapore, but Tae Joo ends the romance days later, returning to Hye Lin and later getting engaged. Through the ups and downs, the couple inevitable get back together at the end of the drama.
Cha Hye Lin (Yoon Ji Hye) is the daughter of a mall owner. She’s somewhat cocky with an independent attitude, but is most vulnerable when it comes to Joon Hyuk, her forbidden lover. Joon Hyuk was brought into her family and was placed in a brotherly position, so any romantic relationship with him was completely off-limits. Desperate to get over Joon Hyuk and to evade an arranged marriage, Hye Lin seeks Tae Joo. They share a steamy relationship in public, but are not at all lovey-dovey in private. They get engaged because Hye Lin falls in love with Tae Joo. He is reluctant in contributing to the relationship, but is moved by her initiative. Their personalities are matching to a certain degree: she’s very straightforward, independent, but persistent in love; he’s ambitious, with knowledge of what he wants in life.
QSS proved to be a likeable drama with realism in the story and acting. Although it shares the typical elements of a modern kdrama, it shines through as a kdrama with great thought and sentiment. Drama rating: 4.5/5
